Terrorism: the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensifies.

NINE GLOBAL TRENDS FOR 2023

The bloody Hamas attack on the Israeli people confirms the feared global escalation of the war for the coming years, amid a social-collective feeling where living in a state of extreme crisis becomes customary -or scenery-

Just as human beings have the ability to create art and language, we are also overwhelmed by the profound need to establish conflict, those two sides that Nietzsche describes about our existence. The wars of thousands of years, like in the Middle East, that confront essential beliefs about ethics, religion, or socio-economic structure have historically been the 'sleeping giant' that today returns with cruelty.

With the cruelty of dead children and detained elderly, where thousands upon thousands lose their lives, their family, their past, their future every moment. A terrifying and cruel vision of the world. Of being human. Of the essential flaws that accompany us and that create that insatiable evil that brings Zarathustra to life. And which in four days has 3,000 dead and 6,600 injured on both sides, in addition to 187,000 displaced Palestinians fleeing resource blockades.

In a conflict that seems unending. The situation in Gaza has intensified to the point that Israeli authorities announced the assassination of two senior Hamas officials and an "unprecedented" attack on the Strip. The Israeli army recently reported that it responded with artillery to shots from Syria, marking this as the first attack from that country since the escalation of violence between Israel and Gaza militias began. All this while the first plane with advanced ammunition from the United States arrives to support its Jewish allies.

To understand the current moment, we must look back. In 2021, Hamas launched rockets at Israel after clashes at the Al Aqsa mosque, triggering an 11-day conflict that resulted in the death of over 200 people. In 2022 and 2023, we saw an escalation of attacks and reprisals that culminated in this escalation.

Hamas's attack has been dubbed by Israel as "our September 11th", referring to its magnitude and surprise. While Hamas's operation has been meticulous and complex, it is surprising that with Israel's advanced technology and surveillance, Hamas managed to evade its intelligence, reviving ghosts of the past.

Why does Hamas choose to attack now? One possibility is that they took advantage of the political and moral situation Israel is going through, coupled with weekly protests against Netanyahu's administration. It is evident that the Israeli army's focus on protecting Jewish settlements in the West Bank gave Hamas an advantage. Added to this is the possible intervention of Iran's Quds Force, supporting Hamas's offensive, and the growing threat of normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

That said, it's time to bluntly ask: is the world prepared to face a global conflagration? The conflict between Israel and Hamas is not an isolated anomaly, but a reflection of the volatility and complexity of the international scene. Adding tensions in Ukraine and provocations from other global actors, including Taiwan or Central Africa, puts us 'on the edge of a precipice'.

It is crucial that the international community does not view these events as separate pieces, but as parts of a whole that could trigger a global catastrophe. If we don't take preventive measures and mediate in these conflicts, we could find ourselves on an irreversible path to war.

This is why amid this growing tension, the recent stance of Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia, is worrying and confusing. His messages on X (formerly Twitter) have escalated to such an extent that they were quoted by the very terrorist group Hamas on their Telegram account. A 'snowball' effect causing consternation not only in Colombia but also on the international stage, where clarity and firm diplomacy have been crucial and essential.

Because this conflict between Hamas and Israel is nothing more than a sinister echo of the turmoil that has characterized the world in recent years. This violent act reaffirms the growing instability that has been brewing, suggesting an uncertain and potentially devastating future.

The constant feeling of tension and the unpredictable nature of current conflicts not only threaten regional peace but also the structure of the global community. As we adapt to living in a perpetual state of crisis, it becomes essential to understand the reasons for these events and seek viable solutions to ensure a safer future.
